Kill zone times (New York)

A kill zone is a time window in which ICT expects the market to make its important moves of the session. All times are New York time (ET), which is what the windows are defined in. New to the idea? Read ICT kill zones explained, or look up any term in the ICT glossary.

ICT kill zones in New York time
Kill zoneNew YorkWhat it is
London02:00–05:00 ETThe London open. Often makes the high or low of the day before New York arrives.
NY AM09:30–11:30 ETThe New York stock market open at 09:30. The busiest window for index futures such as NQ and ES.
NY Lunch11:30–13:30 ETMidday. Volume usually drops, and many ICT traders stand aside.
NY PM13:30–16:00 ETThe afternoon session into the 16:00 close.
Asia20:00–00:00 ETThe evening session that opens the futures trading day. Ranges set here are often swept later.

Quiet bands, never counted as a kill zone: LDN Lunch 05:00–07:00 ET, Pre-Market 07:00–09:30 ET.

How to use the clock

  1. Check the headline: it says whether a kill zone is open, and how long it has left.
  2. Plan around the next window. The countdown skips the weekend, when futures are closed.
  3. Watch the macros: 24 short windows across the day, each 20 minutes long, from :50 to :10 around the hour.
  4. Use your own time beside each window, so you never convert time zones by hand.

Example: London and New York on a European clock

London runs 02:00–05:00 ET. In Berlin that is 08:00–11:00 in January. NY AM (09:30–11:30 ET) is 15:30–17:30 in Berlin, and the same in July, because both cities change their clocks. They do it on different dates, so for two or three weeks in March and one in October or November the gap is an hour shorter. The clock above always uses the real dates.

Journal by kill zone

In the daqverse journal, every trade is tagged with its kill zone and ICT macro from its entry time, in New York time whatever your own time zone. Analytics then shows your results by window, so you can see which sessions you trade well.

Questions

What are the ICT kill zones in New York time?

In daqverse they are: Asia 20:00–00:00 ET, London 02:00–05:00 ET, NY AM 09:30–11:30 ET, NY Lunch 11:30–13:30 ET, NY PM 13:30–16:00 ET. Traders and teachers draw them slightly differently; these are the hours the daqverse journal tags trades with.

Do kill zones change with daylight saving time?

No, not in New York: they are New York clock times all year. On your own clock they can move. In London, NY AM runs 14:30–16:30 in January and in July, because both countries change their clocks; for a few weeks in March and around the start of November they change on different dates, and it starts an hour earlier.

What is an ICT macro?

A macro is a short window, about 20 minutes, that ICT teaches to watch for a quick, targeted move in price. The clock shows the hourly macros from 10 minutes before the hour to 10 minutes after it (for example 09:50–10:10 ET).

Why does the clock say the market is closed?

CME futures stop from Friday 17:00 to Sunday 18:00 New York time. During that weekend gap no kill zone is active, and the countdown runs to Sunday evening's Asia session.

Is London Lunch a kill zone?

Not in this clock. London Lunch (05:00–07:00 ET) and the New York pre-market (07:00–09:30 ET) are shown as quiet bands between kill zones, as the daqverse journal does.
